Wealdstone v Chesterfield – 13 April 2024

Paul Cook made 6 changes from the Easter Monday defeat against Kidderminster:
Tyrer, Horton, Grimes, Oldaker, Jacobs and Banks returned in place of Boot, Clements, Freckleton, Jones, Naylor and Hobson.

Game got underway with the Spireites in change of strip of orange and black, Stones in their usual blue and white.

First 15 minutes were pretty much controlled by some neat passing football, but not really getting anywhere regarding chances created. Stones managed to breach and break the visitors’ defence and only a last gasp tackle from Horton (he had to get it correct) from Duku. And a one on one save by Tyrer after Allarakhia broke again with pace, so the danger was always there. Grimes’s long range shot on 36 minutes was parried by keeper Dewhurst. Dobra put it away but it was judged to still be in the keeper’s hands. And so we went in level at 0-0 at the break.

Second half started much the same as the first with nothing clinical at the end of the moves. Stones then started to get a grip in midfield and that came to fruition when an awful back pass from Grimes went straight to substitute Silva who gladly shot home to make it 1-0 for the home team.

For the rest of the game, Stones could have added more, whilst the Spireites never really looked like scoring. Palmer did eventually find the net but it was judged offside by the assistant referee who a few minutes earlier hadn’t seen the Stones’ keeper catch the ball four feet outside his own box, right near him.

It was another very lethargic and lacklustre performance from the Spireites and not the ending everyone wanted after being crowned champions three weeks earlier.

Corner count: Wealdstone 2, Spireites 7.
Card count: Wealdstone 3, Spireites 1.

Attendance: 2143 with 975 sold tickets for the visiting fans.

Quick turn around for Monday, with the Spireites travelling up to Gateshead.

Wealdstone 1 Chesterfield 0
